The Village Maker
You are not building a social network.
You are building the first human-scale internet. Every platform in history has ignored Dunbar's number — 150. The human limit for real relationship. Mura does the opposite. It scales by multiplication of human-sized units. Every village stays at 150. When it fills, it seeds the next one.
Why found a village
Meaning at the right moment
AI is dissolving economic identity faster than history has ever moved. When that happens — humanity needs a new structure for meaning. Fast. The village is that structure.
Your community. Your constitution.
You set the three rules. You choose who joins. You name the buildings. You decide whether it's open, applied, or invited. The village is yours — and entirely governed by its members.
Preservation of knowledge
The skills that hands carry. The knowledge that dies with the last masters — preserved. The village becomes the school becomes the archive becomes the seed.
A network, not a platform
Villages form alliances, guilds, trade routes, residency exchanges. Members migrate between villages, carrying their craft history with them. The network grows — the human experience never changes.
How it works

Found your village — name it, write its founding line, set your three rules, choose who can join. Seven words seal its soul.

Nine buildings come with it — the Bonfire, Gallery, Library, Studio, Residency, School, Commons, Mentor Cluster, Observatory. Rename them for your craft. The Bonfire and Observatory stay fixed.

Mura is already watching — the village's own intelligence. Present in every building. Silent most of the time. When it speaks, it earns it. One question. Then silence.

The Council governs — members vote on proposals with weighted voice (older members carry more weight, not more power). The founder holds the line on harm only. The village decides who it wants to be.

When it fills — it seeds — at 150 members a group of 5 can migrate and found the next village, carrying their governance history with them. Villages have genealogies. The splits are visible.
The non-negotiable rules
These travel with every village that spawns. They are not product decisions. They are civilisational values encoded into structure.
No algorithmic feed. Discovery is intentional. You walk to the places you want to go. Nothing is pushed at you.
Craft age visible on every profile. The years a maker has practised — always shown. Never used for ranking. It informs, not excludes.
Makers own their data. Export everything, anytime. When someone leaves — they take their full history. No platform lock-in. Ever.

How membership works
Inactive members — day 90
Mura speaks at 30 days of silence. Again at 60. At 90 — the spot is released. One message, not a guilt trip. Their data is kept for a year. If they return — it's all still there.
Lurkers are welcome
Low-activity members are not a problem. Witnesses matter. One restriction: you cannot vote in the Council until 30 days residence and at least one piece of writing.
Culture corrects before system does
If a member causes friction — another member speaks privately first. The Council raises a concern if needed. Three escalation levels before removal. Disagreement is not grounds. Pattern that damages the village is.
The founder holds one line
The village governs itself. Mura watches and flags. Members speak. The Council decides. The founder intervenes only for harm. This is governance — not moderation.

New members arrive through Ashford — the threshold village. Open, warm, no commitment. They browse the village map, visit as guests, feel the culture. They knock when they're ready. Your Council votes within 7 days. Simple majority: does this person belong here?

THE SYSTEM
Instagram is the world's biggest art gallery and craft marketplace. But it was never built for artists and makers. It was built for engagement. For advertising revenue. For keeping people scrolling.
The uncomfortable truth: Instagram needs makers more than makers need Instagram.
81% of creators use it to market their work. It has become the default channel for makers -- not because it's the best tool for them, but because there was no alternative. They didn't choose it consciously. They followed where everyone else went. And then got trapped by the sunk cost of everything they built there.
The platform runs on hope. And hope is the product.
THE CASINO
77% of all Instagram influencer accounts are nano-influencers -- people with 1,000 to 10,000 followers.
The vast majority of makers are grinding in that zone. Posting consistently. Learning the algorithm. Chasing engagement. Not because it's working. Because the platform constantly shows them the few who made it.
This is exactly how a casino operates. Everyone sees the person winning. Nobody sees the thousands who didn't.
The dream of growth is the product. Instagram's business model needs millions of small creators producing free content. The dream keeps them producing.
A potter with 3,000 loyal people who actually buy her work -- who commission pieces, come to workshops, recommend to friends -- feels like a failure next to someone with 50,000 followers who sells nothing tangible.
The platform measures the wrong things for makers. And makers have internalized those wrong measurements as truth.
They don't know it. That is the core problem. They accept how the situation is. They are made to believe that everyone can be successful if they just work harder.
But just a few get there. The system is designed that way.

A maker can build 10,000 followers through genuine work. The platform owns those relationships. It can reassign their audience to someone else tomorrow. The maker has no home. Just a borrowed crowd.

THE LIE
People with more followers have perceived status. More say. More authority. Even when that authority is completely disconnected from actual mastery.
The 50k account knows this. They have reach. People give them authority based on that number. So they think that way too -- they've internalized the metric even when they know it's hollow.
Meanwhile the real masters -- people with 20 years of practice, extraordinary skill, deep knowledge -- have no social media following because they were too busy actually mastering their craft.
They know the truth about quality. But they have no platform to speak from. They are frustrated. And invisible.
You cannot just remove the metric. You have to replace it with a better one.
THE VASE
When you hold a well-made vase and it's balanced -- then you know.
No algorithm can replicate that moment. No reel, no photo, no follower count can tell you what your hands know in three seconds.
Clay Village doesn't replace that embodied moment of knowing. It creates enough trust that the visitor gets on a plane, drives to the studio, attends the residency, holds the vase.
The platform is the bridge to the real world. Not the replacement for it.
THE TRAP
We are approaching post-labour economics.
The grinding. The escaping. The climbing. And then you turn around and your life is over.
People who philosophize about life in a post-labour economy get scared of depression without work. Because that's who we've become -- people who derive purpose entirely from productivity.
The trap: we can't figure out what life is actually for.
Making things. Being present. Genuine connection. But by the time we understand that, will the window have already closed?
Clay Village sits inside this tension. It doesn't solve it. But it points toward something -- that the making itself is the point. Not the metrics around the making.
THE VILLAGE
You can't just remove the metric. You have to replace it with a better one.
In a real village, authority was earned through:
Time in the craft -- how long have they been doing this seriously. Vouching -- who in the community respects them and says so. Teaching -- did they pass knowledge on, did students grow. Real transactions -- did people actually pay, return, commission again. Peer recognition -- do other serious makers consider them serious.
None of these can be bought. None of them can go viral. They take years.
That's the point.
THE ARK
The flood is the algorithm. AI-generated slop drowning real craft. Follower counts replacing mastery. Makers grinding content instead of making things.

Not because we think Instagram will disappear. Because we think the real ones deserve a place that was designed to see them.
